The next morning, I walked to the courthouse. I filed an amendment changing my legal surname back to Mara. Not for anonymity—the press would print whatever suited them—but because names are promises, and I was done promising my mother’s idea of me to anyone. The clerk stamped the form with a sound like a door shutting, solid and true.

I think back to the bridal suite. The text at 7:42 a.m. The room tilting. The way my pulse slowed instead of sprinting. It wasn’t heartbreak that steadied me. It was freedom, arriving as paperwork.
